Elizabeth Captive Princess
Published in Hardcover by Ulverscroft Large Print Books (June, 1974)
Author: Margaret Irwin

HISTORICAL FICTION AT IT'S BEST
This is the 2nd historical novel Margaret Irwin wrote about Elizabeth I. The 1st, Young Bess, was about her childhood. This novel, covers the period of her sister Mary's reign. You don't need to read the 1st to enjoy the 2nd, although I HIGHLY recommend both. A historical novel should not only entertain but give the reader some feeling for what it was like to live in a particular time & place. This Margaret Irwin does splendidly. She portrays a young woman who had to watch every word & gesture to merely survive. Elizabeth, in my opinion, was one of the greatest rulers England ever had. Irwin's attention to detail help you understand what she had to endure to reach her throne & what made her the brilliant, courageous soul she was.

The Encyclopedia of Fungi of Britain and Europe: Indentifies 1,000 Species With Color Photographs
Published in Hardcover by Sterling Publications (May, 1998)
Author: Michael Irwin Jordan
Average review score:

An excellent, carefully compiled reference
This is a very useful book because it has well-taken pictures that show the habitat where the fungi was found. Also, the beginning of the book has pictures of spores as they look under a microscope and a color chart for the colors described in the text. The description of each fungi also lists any chemical reagent useful for identification and the expected result. A wonderful identification guide. He should write a similar book for fungi of the United States.

Enjoying World History
Published in Paperback by Amsco School Pubns (June, 1977)
Authors: Henry Abraham and Irwin Pfeffer
Average review score:

The perfect supplement for the world history student.
This book (recently re-printed and updated in 1992) is an excellent supplement for both the world history student and teacher. Written by former high school histroy teachers, it contains nover one hundred stories that are fictional but based on accurate historical truth. Each story teaches a specific lesson in world history and contains introductory and postscript material to the stories as well. Perhaps its greatest strength is that the book contains stories that span from prehistoric man through today and covers many different cultures as well (not just western civilization cultures). The stories contain a remarkble and expansive range, such as: a debate between the benefits/drawbacks of hunting vs. farming between two ancient people in 8000 BC; an Indian mother arguing with her daughter about why she (a Brahman) cannot associate with children of the lower castes; a French husband and wife watching the fall of the Bastille in 1789. This reviewer has personally typed the stories fromt he book onto sheets and wrote questions on the back for my students to answer once they've read the stories. The lengths of the stories typically range from one-two pages in length. I heartily recommend this book for the history teacher who wishes to enhance and enrich their curriculum. Check out their second book for US history teachers called Enjoying American History.

Environmental Security and Global Stability: Problems and Responses
Published in Hardcover by Lexington Books (December, 2002)
Authors: Max G. Manwaring, Paul G., II Gaffney, and Irwin G. Deutscher
Average review score:

May be "Ref A" for New National Security Focus

This book is very original and very helpful in exploring an area of national security conceptualization and doctrine that has been long neglected--that of the relationship between environmental security and stability, and all the bad things that happen when this is lost--ultimately causing poverty, mass migrations, disease, crime, and war.

The contributing editor, Dr. Max Manwaring (Col USA Ret) uses an interview with General Anthony Zinni, then Commander-in-Chief of the Central Command, to examine key issues such as the desperate need for inter-agency coordination and information sharing, the looming catastrophic problems with rain forests, seabed resources, and inland water scarcity, ending with the urgent need for a national security "game plan" for dealing with this non-traditional threat over time and across all nations including the 32 failed states where many of the problems will not be addressed without outside intervention.

All eight of the chapters, the last being a conclusion by the contributing editor, make provocative, documented cases for the urgency of this non-traditional threat. Throughout the book it is clear that the US Department of Defense has some extremely bright uniformed and retired (teaching) officers who are thinking great thoughts, and it is equally clear that they are not being listened to. This book is probably ten years ahead of its time, and it will be ten years before this book is read and understood by a Secretary of Defense (or ten years before someone reading the book today will be eligible for that position).

I recommend this book be read together with Andrew Price-Smith's book on "The Health of Nations" (on re-emerging infectuous diseases), Laurie Garrett's book "Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public Health", Marq de Villiers' book "WATER: The Fate of Our Most Precious Resource", David Helvarg's "BLUE FRONTIER: Saving America's Living Seas," and Brian Czech's "Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train" (on errant economists and shameful spenders).

FILM FESTIVAL CARNIVOUS!
Terorrists bother film-goers and critics at Cannes Film Festival. Best safe if you wear sunglasses (so to minimize your identity). '99 Oscars honoring Kazan has potential for "...life to imitate art...". Wouldn't that be cool? Let's GO!

Review of Gleim Financial Accounting Questions & Explanation
Gleim offers a wonderful study guide with the Financial Accounting Exam Questions and Explanations book. A recent college grad, this book was used as a supplementary study aid by my accounting instructors that gives multiple choice type questions with suppoting explanations of both the correct and incorrect answers of recent CPA exam questions. It is a great asset and I plan to use it in preparation of the CPA exam.
